A-List (to me) implies a fame factor and a bankability factor that is far more far-reaching than a Kardashian or a Hilton.

it's some who has broad-spectrum fame. someone who is a draw on their own. someone with huge name recognizablitity and face recognizability.
someone can be uber-hot in their niche market, but i don't think A-List applies there.

if an actor drops out of a project and it threatens whether the film gets made then they might be A-List. That's never been McConaughey. -- nm

At the end of the day, A-List comes down to staying power. Adam Ant isn't A-List, but some reactionary would have said so at the time. -- nm

I think it comes down to this: Is credibility required to be A-list?

I'd say McConaughey was A list from 2003-2008, but maybe not quite there anymore, because I think B listers can still open movies. -- nm

To me you have to go look in a retirement home to find someone who doesn't know an A-lister

It depends on the realm. In Twitter, she and Ashton are A-List. -- nm
