What is the preferred format of video files from other media? Like DVDs or TV shows saved to disk to be played back?

AVI is just a container. It can hold many different video codecs/formats inside it -- nm

Torrenters (in your example), typically put Divx or Xvid (which are MPEG-4 video derivaties) inside AVI because it has great compression ratios -- nm

It's still my format of choice on my MythTV. Never have audio sync issues when transcoding to it using Nero, even with AC3 audio tracks

That really kinda depends on what player you're going to use, but MPEG-2 is what DVDs and HDTV is basically -- nm
