DCers "All Potomac River Bridges Expected to Be Closed to Personal Vehicles"

The U.S. Secret Service is expected to announce this afternoon that all Potomac bridge crossings from Virginia into the District will be closed to personal vehicles on Inauguration Day Jan. 20, report Post staff writers Eric M. Weiss and Lena H. Sun.

Only buses, emergency vehicles, taxis, limousines and other "authorized vehicles" will be allowed over the normally busy crossings, according to transportation officials familiar with the plans, but who declined to speak on the record because the Secret Service is the lead agency. The Memorial Bridge and Chain Bridge are likely to be reserved for pedestrians and emergency vehicles only. However, several Anacostia River crossings from Maryland into the District will be open for normal travel, including the Sousa, Whitney Young and Benning Road bridges. There will be no restrictions on New York Avenue, transportation officials said. Still, officials are urging people not to attempt to drive into the city.
