Depends how frequent the communications have become.

I try to remain formal in all my e-mails. But after you've swapped a dozen e-mails with the person in the span of a couple of hours, I can understand them just "IM-ing" their e-mail. And if it's their habit to write "J" instead of "Joe" on brief missives, I wouldn't mind it.
