As I've posted before - I took care of my mum for several years while she suffered Alzheimers. For those who aren't familiar - it can be a rather slow loss of memory (like for her) where short term memory goes first - but long term memory holds fast pretty well.
Well - my mom was a pretty neat lady back in her day - she went to college in Westchester Pennsylvania (A college that at that time was known as "the muscle factory" - because it produced a LOT of athletes.) mom was one of the athletes and she was one of the first women to join the WAC's (Women's Army Corp.) - she got married late (for her age) and had wonderful adventures both before and after marriage ... but particularly before - growing up during the depression in a family of 8 - it's really rather amazing all she was able to do in her lifetime. She left a great legacy of letters, clippings, photographs, etc. and I have often thought it would be really cool to do a story where she is a main character and has a favored Grandchild who takes an interest in her history and puts together realistic and historically accurate adventures for her - to re-engage her long term memory and essentially "live in her world" (as I learned was the easiest way to cope with my own mum's dimentia spikes ... not argue with her as logic had no place in her brain - but to go with whatever she was thinking at the time). In the process of giving this "peace of mind" to the Grandmother, of course, the Grandchild would learn and perhaps even discover something amazing (I have yet to figure that part out yet ... maybe a hidden treasure or something?) - and it would be something that would help all the people who have someone suffering this illness to pick up the little tips and tricks for coping - simple things like getting the person to start a journal - so when they forget stuff they have something to read to remind themselves - plus it keeps their writing skills intact. All the little things that I've always thought about somehow trying to put together ... because it makes things so much easier - even stuff that may never occur to people - like how the dimentia spikes tend to happen just before and during the full moon.
I'm probably just dreaming though that this would be of any interest to anyone but me. :)
