When I drove across country I took 5 days and nights. For 3 of the nights I stayed at a Super 8.

Three Super 8s in 3 different states and they were all sparkling clean, had a recliner as well as a work table and 2 chairs, free internet access, and a decent self serve breakfast bar with cereal, fruit, juice, pastries, bagels, etc.
If I'm not going to a hotel as a "destination", like Disney or Vegas, Super 8 is my goto choice of a decent place to sleep for not a lot of money. They have a club program you can join online that gets you discounts, early/late check-in/check-out, free nights, check writing (for cash) privilidges and some other stuff.
When we moved from Seattle to Idaho, we had a reservation at a Red Lion (part of the Hyatt Regency chain). The room was filthy and the AC wasn't working so we went right back to the desk, cancelled the reservation and left. A half a mile away was a Super 8 that had a room (it was around 7:30 pm). The room was super clean, 1/2 again as big as the Red Lion room and was $45 bucks cheaper. I found the same thing when I drove across country (also moving) and stopped for the night in Montana close to the main gate of Yellowstone. I couldn't believe it, the room was as nice as a resort room. I got upgraded because of my club card and had a big whirlpool tub (which I needed!). The only bad thing was, it was snowing like crazy when we got up in the morning, in the middle of June! The only clothes we had that weren't packed in the monster UHaul truck were shorts and t shirts. They GAVE us lined windbreakers to use until we got down to a warmer altitude. :)
