So, you think the QB should only get credited with the yards between his hands and the receivers?

Because that's not a good way to measure things, but is the only way without factoring in YAC.
As an example, a QB could have the following two options:
Option A: A receiver 40 yards down field, but covered well enough that he will get tackled almost as soon as he catches the ball. And possibly intercepted or broken up.
Option B: A receiver 25 yards down field, but has beaten his coverage and has a straight shot at 20 yards easily, and probably a TD.
Throwing out YAC completely, Option A is the best option for the stat (if it isn't intercepted or broken up), but Option B is the best option for winning the game. If the stat doesn't reward the player for doing the best thing they can to win the game, the stat is worthless.
