Hmmm....I have not noticed a lot of the paid for ones but I think you are right about the subscription ones...

I lost track of how many e-newsletters I have through work now. And most have only been in the last two to three years. Its amazing how much free info there is out there.
And while RSS feeds are a few years old too, I saw it really become mainstream last year.
