None of these were Grand Canyon. We were north of the GC in what's known as the Arizona Strip. The part of the state that's pretty much cut off by the Colorado River. Or, you're probably referring to the ones of the Little Painted Desert? That's just across Hwy 40 from Winslow - just a strip of badlands between the Little Colorado River and the Hopi Mesas.

Yes, the 'squiggles' are prehistoric petroglyphs - most likely pre-dating the contact period. I really hoped someone would have better photos. I wimped on the last short climb because I was worried that my knee wouldn't be able to take the scramble back down the slope.
