I work in downtown Pittsburgh. My building is relatively small (13 floors) and I'm on the 7th floor, but we're within a block of the biggest buildings in town. As background, two items that have had my attention lately: the local filming of the 3rd Dark Knight film and the anniversary stories of 9/11.
When the earthquake hit us, I was in an interior conference room. At first it simply felt like a bit of vertigo. Then someone in the meeting asked, "Did you feel that?" Some people hadn't felt it right away but several of us did. The we realized that the whole building was moving. My first thought was that the pyrotechnic scene for the movie (filmed in a tunnel beneath our building) had been weeks ago and it shouldn't be that. My next thought was to be concerned that an attack had hit something nearby. Each of these items seemed more likely than an earthquake.
After I realized what had happened, I talked to my almost-15 year old son, who was home alone at the time. He said, "Is it 2012 already?" He also claimed that it was kinda cool, but really kinda not. And he observed that if the world is going to end, at least it is ending before school starts!
