I liked Gene at first and I suspect that if you went to his restaurant and liked that style of food, you would think he was a genius. He got his confidence rattled at Gayle's wedding and never recovered from that. He also didn't take criticism well at all. I think he's a perfect example of how a good chef looks in a competition against some of the best chefs in the country. His dishes were good enough for his clientele, but they were not world class.
He was still night and day better than Melissa, though. If I were that woman who got eliminated right off the bat, I'd be so bitter about Melissa being there instead.
