But downhill (to the coast) should be cheaper :) Guess my next trip to KC will be outbound on Amtrak and home on a frequent flyer ticket. -- nm

It's all about demand. Plenty of people want to leave KC. No one wants to go there.

The base fare is the same, the difference is in the roomette. I suspect you pay as if you're occupying it all the way from Chicago. -- nm
