His political legacy is massive in Canada (second greatest NDP leader ever), but...

His body of policy work is not as strong as it is written up.
His "final letter" was a carefully staged political vehicle, something that I don't begrudge him for doing, but it's being made out as a great "statesman like send off" that it really isn't. (Though I guess it's good to show that even cynics like to drop their guard time to time.)
He didn't merit a State Funeral. (I'm a stickler for wearing down traditional barriers of entry.)
And he had some serious personal foibles that I think bar him from "great man" status.
That said, I like that a nakedly ambitious political animal like him can make this his legacy.
Gives another nakedly ambitious political animal hope. ;-)
