i don't think i've ever seen a drunk person in such a dangerous place as i did last night....

so, at 11pm last night we were walking home from seeing Conan at a theatre probably just under a mile from our place. between the theatre and our place is a big bridge over the river on a really busy street. this is fine but currently it's under renovation and the street is down to two lanes (one each way) the entire length of the bridge and for a bit on both ends (they've put a concrete barrier and fence up down the centre for the length of it). this means it's really narrow for cars and there is no spare space or anywhere to go if you need to veer. and one not terribly wide sidewalk.

so, as we are heading downhill approaching the bridge, we see a guy about 100 yards in front of us weaving and stumbling and *clearly* wasted. as we are just saying "oh, i hope he's not going over the bridge" he stumbled off the sidewalk, and, from our perspective, it looked like IN front of a car. turns out it was into the SIDE of a car (which thankfully was going really slow as it was approaching a light), and he fell. we ran to see if he was okay (the car just drove away). his head was bleeding and we got him back on the sidewalk and out of traffic. then we realized we had to walk him home. it was crazy. we had to link his arms and it took physical force to keep him from falling down.

half an hour later we get across the bridge (it was a long, slow walk). and we've heard drunken snippets of his story. seems he's a wine rep, here from the Netherlands, he just left his super gorgeous wife and he knows he's a idiot, blah blah blah. by the time we got him to the place he was staying (practically across the road from us), he was hugging us and thanking us and swearing to be our life long friend. he made me text him so he'd have our number to take us out (yeah, that's going to happen). so i did - i wrote "by the time you read this you'll probably have quite a headache glad we got you home safe!" i bet he has no idea what that means if he sees it this morning.

but, seriously, i'm glad we saw him. there isn't a lot of foot traffic there that time of night but plenty of cars. it could have been bad.
