I can't really fault them for that decision, at least on the assumptions I have about how they made it.

I assume that the consultants they hired gave them really awful advice ("More orange! And make it a social network with incentives for posting nonsense!"). And they might have even backed it with suspect data.
I just had the impression that they weighed preserving the communities that had built up around the old HSX boards against some promise of a huge influx of new members attracted to the "new" HSX. And they made what they thought was an economically viable solution ... which blew up in their faces, wrecked the sense of community, and in hindsight was the absolute worst thing to do.
