They're both a problem that needs to be addressed.

Right now the wild card is the reason neither the Yanks or Sox actually care about winning the division. They're both very likely to make the playoffs and neither appears to be going all out to win the division and it happens nearly every year.
It's the same in the NL with the Braves on cruise control and with no real reason to go all out to win the NL East.
I agree completely that the inequality of the salaries is a major issue and would very likely help to level out the playing field. Even then I would still be in favor of eliminating the wild card. I don't think second place teams should make the playoffs.
