It's not that hard to figure out, really. He did the awkward "I have a friend" thing and he's felt emasculated and humiliated ever since.

All kidding (and a little meanness through realism) aside, the person he should be talking with is Redmond, who has done a remarkable job in finding a way to overcome his previous issues. He still has boundary issues from time to time, but he's grown notably as a human being over the past few years. At our age, that's very difficult to do.
