very cool article by the way. It is so weird to me, though, that people only talk about the violence. Never about the 12 year old prostitute.

I do think the character is quite common in 1970s movies. The teen (or pre teen) who is impossibly worldly and precocious. The end of Taxi Driver hit me as all kinds of wrong. Iris is so damaged, it's hard to believe her parents really were a pair of decent people who only wanted her to come home.
