I think they went back to Mirrodin as sort of a pride issue. The first time around failed so they wanted a do-over.

I'm not a fan of the overuse of 'gold cards' so a return to Ravnica wouldn't be much fun for me. Though they're a lot better than the hybrid mana and the ugly flip cards.
