As you may or may not know, crouching takes you off the radar. So if you are in a nice hidden spot, you can crouch and wait for peeps to come by.

I started Haloing much after most STers, though it was on the last version before Reach. It was frustrating, to say the least. Play some Firefight matchmaking to get used to the weapons. Especially Gruntpocalypse to get used to the DMRs (I recommend Corvette and Hold Out maps for this).
