I guess I figure, if reality were kicking me in the groin the way his reality is kicking him in the groin, I'd be temped to say, "it's most fake" too.

I don't begrudge people being pissed. It's everybody's prerogative to be annoyed and feel slighted by their earnest attempts to help a man who's now trying to disassociate himself from that geniune kindness.
But, like I said, crappy as it may be, it's his defense mechanism for life kicking him in the crotch. It doesn't register for me on the outrage meter, personally. I feel bad for him, cause its a situation where he just looks worse for his trying to cope.
