does it make any sense to start a player who is playing against the defense you are starting?

Yes, do it. An individual player can go nuts, and its nothing compared to the team output.

If it's one of your studs...always start them*. Regardless of matchups.

Sure. If you think they'll do good...even in Blood Feud, I can't think of a situation where I'd bench players or a defense
