involved are saying, but knows that they aren't understanding each other at all.

you know those conversations? *you* realize what each of the parties *thinks* the other person is saying, but they don't get it all - and they think each other are saying something completely different to their actual meaning.

it's like everyone is suddenly ST-Tone Deaf.
