I don't think you can do "each team gets a possession" without making another adjustment to that. It makes it a bigger advantage for the team that gets the second possession. Most teams on the first possession will play like a normal drive. Use 3 downs with the 4th generally being a punt or FG. If they kick a FG, the other team knows they have to score. So they get 4 downs to work with throughout the drive, plus the knowledge that a TD wins it for them.
And you can't argue against disallowing FGs while arguing for the NCAA rules. They start every team in scoring position. Then after a few possessions by each team, if it's still tied, they disallow FGs. And then they disallow extra points.
