*sigh* you go back to the common grandparent (or great, or great great) - it doesn't matter where you fall on the line.

at some point if you both go straight up the line you get to a common person that you are directly descended from. so, you are whatever-cousins and if someone is two generations closer to the common person they are your (whatever) cousin, twice removed.
