My 10 yo daughter wanted to ride her bike over to a friend's house. I haven't met the friend's parents or seen the living arrangements so I told her

I'd walk over with her so I could talk with one of the parents.

After quite a bit of her complaining that that would cramp her style, I told her I was more concerned with her safety than her style.

It felt like maybe she was holding back on some point so I asked what she wasn't telling me.

"Fine! She lives with her grandparents and they're both drunks! But her mom lives there, too, and she's always home!"

If I can meet the Mom and get an idea of the environment she may get to go over but not before I do that.
