There were fires that separated the upper floors from the ones beneath.

Those fires extended to the stairwells and elevator shafts. Some people from the top got through, but I imagine they had to do a leap of faith jump down the shaft and through the fire/smoke.

from the telephoto pictures we saw, it looks like people were driven to the windows by smoke and flames and literally had nowhere to go. -- nm
