Honestly I think we should do away with those loopholes before we raise taxes on 400 million/billionaires and raise estate taxes.
Speaking of estate taxes, imo they should be totally gotten rid of. I mean, taxes have already been paid on the money that went into the estate and also on any profits generated by investments. I don't see how it's fair that the federal government actually taxes the components of an estate 2 or even 3 times (in some cases) then taxes the estate as a whole all over again. I really don't understand the government's rationale to be able to do this.
IMO, while estate taxes are the most egregious of the offenses against the public, sales taxes are almost as bad. Think about it. You are taxed on the money you earn--either from work or in the form of interest--then you are taxed on the money you spend. The company that produces the item you buy is (supposedly) taxed on the profit it makes when you buy it. Now, I can see the company being taxed on its profits, that's income. Also, I don't have a problem with you being taxed on your earned and unearned income (well, I do, but whatever). But I'll be damned if I can figure out why you're taxed for the privilege to buy things using money that's already been taxed. It's enough to make my head explode.
note: in the interest of full disclosure, I'm a democrat and extremely liberal as far as most social issues are concerned. But I do think that the death penalty is sometimes warranted, not as a deterrent but as actual punishment for persons who commit the most heinous crimes. I think every home should contain a long gun for defence and food supply when the zombi apocalypse comes. I think "illegal" drugs should be decriminalized. I don't think we go far enough to give aid to the needy, elderly and disabled. I'm a bit more conservative as far as fiscal matters go--see above. :)
