actually, a lot of the wealth transferred by inheritance may not have been taxed at all

if it's unrealized capital gains, e.g., securities that were only held by the decedent during their life and never cashed in

plus, your estate has to be over the applicable exemption to even get taxed in the first place. most people don't leave an estate large enough to exceed the exemption
