Wife grew up in Fort Erie, Ontario....across from Buffalo...she said Upstate New York was only used for non locals....

Southern Tier and other terms were more common. Thats her experience.
I thought of Buffalo as Upstate New York but refered to it by the local names as we got the Buffalo channels and I dont remember the term used often.
