this is a very natural reaction - trying to justify his actions. You want it to mean more, it just doesn't.

if you really - really want to find out if he wants more - you are going to have to talk to him and then if he says yes - test that theory.
I'm afraid he will say he does if you ask him, to save your feelings. he sounds like he does care for you - just not in that way.
