speaking of birthdays, 2011 is the 50th anniversary of Breakfast at Tiffanys. I read an article in Harpers Bazaar this morning

about weather 'Holly Golightly could exist as a film character' today.

What a piece of crap article it was. it, glancingly, called her a 'lady of the night', so, the writer does realize she was basically a call girl (although i think Truman Capote called the movie version "more of an American Geisha"). but, the writer's article was all about how at the time it was groundbreaking because it gave an alternative view of the life choices a young woman had, that she didn't need to settle down and make safe choices. but how women today can dress up, and party all night, and live on their own, and date multiple men at once, and sleep with people if they want to, and are, essentially, modern day Hollys. they lead the same life.

Um.... modern women who go out, and drink, and choose to go home with a guy because they want to are definitely exploring freedom options that weren't the norm in 1961 (but for sure some women did it) but they *aren't doing it to pay the rent.*
i feel like he missed a really really big fact in his stupid analogy.

totally LYC but this has been bugging me since i read it this morning.
