I don't see why they go from that reality to leaking that you might be hooked on pain pills. You could just fire him, and say, "Look, he won two titles in eight years, and he was a great manager for the Red Sox. But mistakes were made this season that we feel would erode his ability to be an effective manager for this team in 2012, and so we have decided to go in a different direction." That's fine. That's the truth. The rest of it is waving a shiny object.
