In response to "But, see, weddings really *aren't* about the families." by kelly

In one friend's case she looked at it as her gift to her family.

Well, both her and her fiance. They'd been so generous with them way before that point that they felt that it was as much a celebration of their families and their new one.

(Okay, she still wished didn't have to invite her mother.)

They paid for the whole thing and amongst the gifts from friends was the cooking for the reception and the design and sewing of the dress.
