I think it's more about how much he is willing to deal prior to the convention.

He has to be very careful to keep the nutters in the loop in order to avoid the snakebite. I almost felt sorry for Boehner during the last budget crisis. There has always been that awareness that democrats will compromise while conservatives play the hawk role that shuns such acts of "weakness". The people farthest right are the most extreme ones in this regard. The RNC has to find a solution where those people are less encouraged to be treacherous. Boehner couldn't do it, Obama couldn't do it and I haven't see anything from Romney yet that says he can.
