muffins usually have a larger crumb; i guess that's the most obvious difference to me. but i'm just a home cook who often doesn't know what the hell she's talking about.
they do definitely tend to be less sweet, but certainly not savory. the only savory muffins i can think of are corn muffins (and even many of those are sweet).
