I can easily identify where we knew things were off.

Referring to the seriouseats version of the recipe (which is practically the same...it just uses salted butter rather than unsalted butter + salt separately):

"Add the confectioners' sugar and powdered milk mixture to the wet ingredients; stir well until the mixture is thoroughly incorporated and **********smooth***********."

This did not happen for us. The Harvard Video shows a pourable, batter-like consistency, while ours would hardly be stirred together and was chunky and rigid.
