more than a little star struck - but I get that way around famous people. I just couldn't believe at times that I was so close to someone I had watched on Lettermen or read their books with such pleasure - in the little Traverse City Opera House of all places. We were on the main floor - 2nd row - in CHAIRS ... and just to the side of being straight on for the podium where he spoke. He requested no photos unfortunately or I would have totally snapped a picture! He had a much softer voice in person that when I've heard him on TV or Radio - and some of the works he read he had just written and was editing them on his tour (41 stops in 42 days I think it is? - crazy)
He has a wicked sense of humor and told a few very dirty jokes and the way he looked at the audience and laughed/grinned after the punch line was like seeing a little boy telling a naughty tale and being caught - it was - well - just adorable - I was quite taken with him really. He also gave a plug to another author's book - which was another thing I found quite endearing ... he's just a lovely man.
My favorite reading was about his medical and dental encounters in France - he's so gifted.
The guy who introduced him included the question "and don't we all need a good laugh about now?" ... David did not disappoint.
