i'm boo-ing carolyn on that answer. theme parties aren't rude. they are parties, being thrown by someone, to which you may attend or not,

but there is more to being a good guest than just showing up. (like, you bring a bottle or something, you don't arrive late to a dinner party, you don't invite countless extra people without clearing it, you socialize, you *make an effort to adhere to the theme if you choose to attend.*)

there are exceptions, obviously, (ie: coming from another party), but, it's not rude to expect a thematic effort from your guests.
