"Shane is a bad man, evil etc." And that still may be the right feeling. But you can't exclude the fact that Shane, may have, in a moment of desperation, decided this was how it had to be in order to save Carl. If he sacrificed himself, it is still no guarantee that Otis would make it out alive. And then they would all be dead. So he kept fate in his own hands.
The more I think about it the more interesting it makes the world they live in and the rules they now need to live by. The moral code of pre-apocalypse doesn't apply as easily anymore. Intriguing for sure.
I also really liked Rick and Lori's discussion about what is the best fate for Carl in this new world. Again a very tough choice.
