The dude is looking for someone to say his friends are okay and normal and to just go out with them.

He knows the drinking is bad, and he tried to do something about it last year to no effect. Now he's facing the prospect of 'doing the right thing' which will potentially alienate his neighbors/friends and he's looking for an out or reinforcement that he's doing the right thing and that the potential alienation is worth it.
I give this guys kudos, what he's doing isn't the easiest thing.
