I think she should have nipped herself from him some if he wasn't able to reciprocate and she wasn't willing to just be friends with him.

and upon second reading of the description I don't think he acted with any malice or true jerkery. I think he liked having her in his life but she wanted something from him he couldn't/wouldn't give.
