What lawyer culpability do you see? I didn't read any claims of misconduct.

A lawyer's job is to vigorously represent their client. We love to hate on lawyers when they do that, and rightfully so when a lawyer files a frivolous case, but I don't think this is that case (again, the damage request is asinine, but the case is not).
I have my doubts about 50,000 worth of lawyer cost for the defendant, but if that's accurate, I can only imagine that the (ex-)husband's lawyer (or the ex-husband, if he is the lawyer) is burying him with procedural matters to drive up his cost. Which is uncool. And, as I understand, not uncommon. And, perfectly legal. Maybe it shouldn't be.
Now, if they are piling on like that, I hope the judge slaps him with paying the defendant's legal fees (I do think she has that power)
