NY pizza is distinct, in that it's as close to the original Neapolitan pizza as you can get in the States. But it also set the standard for every

pizza chain in the country about what a pizza is expected to be like.

The big pizza chains all make versions of the New York pizza, but with things Americans like - more meat, more cheese, barbecue flavour, etc

While Chicago style pizza is its own thing - different dough in a deep-dish pie shape, thick toppings, etc. So it's no surprise that Chicagoans are proud of it, and they see it as distinctively Chicago.
