There were people in Idaho building houses in Idaho right after the civil war, before it was Idaho.

Evidently a lot of ex-confederate soldiers moved out here into the territories because Sherman didn't leave much after his burning spree plus there was a big gold and silver rush at the tail end of the 1860s. There's even a tiny town up in the mountains called "Dixie".
