the tortured logic people use in these cases to make themselves be able to sleep at night is something.

you have to have a little bit of you die if you consider that logic as justifying what happened.
The fact that you mull it over and then ultimately come up with the conclusion that they are better off means you're flawed fundamentally. Actually, I think they simply grab that justification as the easy way out internally and then shut everything else down as quickly as they can.
