More concern about DC roads/bridges closing

The concern of many of the nurses and doctors I spoke to was pretty simple - it was going to be impossible for a lot of them to get to the hospital at Georgetown University because of roads and bridges being closed.

Here's one crazy example of the decision making involved.

Georgetown has a courtesy bus that makes stops just across the Potomac River in Virgina, picking up employees, to get them to and from work.

But when the Key Bridge (which links Georgetown and the Rosslyn area in Virginia) is shut down for the Inaugural, the Georgetown buses aren't going to be allowed to cross the bridge, even though it will be open to mass transit vehicles.

All five bridges that link Virginia and the District of Columbia will be closed to traffic starting on Monday the 19th. Only "official" vehicles will be allowed to cross, along with transit buses.

Two of those five bridges are now going to be opened to pedestrians, but only because of an outcry from local elected officials.

Georgetown University Hospital officials met with one of the local Virginia Congressmen early this week about the Inaugural road and bridge questions. It was the talk of the staff in our wing.

One other thought here - it's one thing for it to be difficult for doctors, nurses and other workers to get to Washington, D.C. hospitals because of Inaugural closures - how about people that might need to get to those medical facilities because they need urgent care?
