the viewer usually sees Clay through Jax's eyes. When there's harmony between the two, Clay is more likable. When they're opposed, Clay is more the villain.
Which is usually the case when there's a back-and-forth relationship between protagonist and antagonist, right?
What's a little different in this case is that the viewer knows stuff - considerable stuff - about Clay that Jax doesn't know....and the show does a good job of keeping it on the backburner on the viewer's mind...so even when you're looking at Clay more favorably, you remember that there's a slow-burning fuse that's eventually going to cause cataclysm.
