Heroes spoiler from last night & a question

I love Arthur Petrelli. he is the first person on there who actually knows how to think and plan in advance. I am aslo thrilled he took Peter's powers. Peter has to be one of the dumbest characters ever written [he makes Chrissy Snow on 3 Company look like a Rhodes Scholar].

BUT I have 1 continuity question. Peter absorbs powers by being in the vicinity of another, theoretically he could have fought off his father's attack. why didn't he even try???
