Also (and this could be even more wrong, but seems right to me)

Most of the pop/dance on the radio today seems to be by females, and most mainstream bands have tended to be male. For whatever reason, the mainstream does not overly embrace female bands (or maybe female bands just aren't as prevalent). So a mainstream favoring women will result in more solo acts than bands
